We had decided a long time ago that we wanted our country home to have a steel roof. Rolled steel roofing has a 50 year life expectancy, and this was appealing to us. Much thought was given to steel over asphalt shingles, as neither is terribly eco-friendly, but we feel the steel won-out as in 20 years we won't be stripping off the old roof, adding it to a land-fill and installing a new roof. The steel should still be going strong, and any leaks can be patched.
Other roof coverings such as recycled rubber or slate shingles were never a consideration due to their cost.
We also found there are several different opinions on the correct way to install a steel roof. Sheathing, no sheathing, strapping choices, drilling on the ground, no drilling in advance, etc. etc.
We chose to cover the trusses with Typar, strap it every 24" and then install the steel and these pictures represent the first layer of our roof.
DONE!
